FAQs
How is your teaching method different from other music lessons?
My teaching method adapts to each student’s unique abilities, vitality, and focus. Rather than relying on pre-set musical materials, I introduce various skills, musical knowledge, and values through creative exploration that unfolds in the moment with the child. This approach keeps children engaged with curiosity and excitement while fostering their natural gifts and creative potential.
What can I expect during a typical lesson?
Each lesson begins with a check-in to explore recent musical inspirations and challenges, followed by a warm-up. From there, we take one of two pathways, depending on the child’s interests and focus:
Exploring Improvisation:
Through free play inspired by the child’s current mood and creativity, we discover a musical idea to explore together. Using this idea as a foundation, I introduce various techniques and skills, while also accompanying the student musically to develop it into a unique composition.
Learning a Specific Piece:
If the child feels inspired by a particular piece of music, we dive into learning it with a focus on embodying its musicality. Together, we listen to the recordings of legendary performances to uncover its expressive qualities. We then approach it step by step, working carefully on phrasing and interpretation to cultivate a deeper understanding and connection to the music.
This tailored approach ensures that each lesson is engaging, enriching, and aligned with the child’s interests and growth.
Do you offer lessons for beginners, or is your approach for more experienced students?
Yes, I offer lessons for students at all levels. My teaching methods are adaptable, even for those who cannot yet read music. I’ve witnessed students make remarkable progress and enjoy positive, uplifting experiences regardless of their starting point. Each lesson is designed to meet the student where they are, fostering growth and confidence in their musical journey.
How do you track my child’s progress and development in music?
In addition to foundational musical skills and techniques, I observe and celebrate my students’ growth in several key areas: their musical initiative, comfort and confidence with their instrument, clarity in performance, and a deepening sense of trust and engagement in musical exploration. Progress is reflected not just in technical ability, but in their creative expression, enjoyment, and connection to music.
How long are the lessons, and how often do they occur?
Typical lessons are 1 hour long. However, some families choose to extend lessons to 1.5 hours, as their child becomes deeply engaged in the musical exploration. Lessons are held on a weekly basis, providing consistent progress and development.
How much is a lesson, and do you have any policies?
Each lesson is $75 per hour.
We work together to create a nurturing learning environment under the following policy. This ensures that we honor the commitment we make to each other while allowing me to maintain the dedicated time and space for our lessons.
